The Process Design and Improvement method offers a best practice approach to help organizations to identify and then streamline their core end-to-end processes. This helps to deliver competitive advantage, along with sustainable benefits. The method applies some of the key principles of Business Process Management (BPM) and traditional process improvement approaches.
Business Processes
Design & Optimization
The Process Design and Improvement method describes a methodology to design or improve organization’s business processes in terms of efficiency, quality and timeliness.

”Established processes
can help you produce
products or services
more efficient and
conduct business in
a cost-effective way

Method Overview
Even though some organizations may have more complex processes than others, all of them can be grouped into 3 main categories:
Operational (primary): processes that are directly related to income generation
Supporting (secondary): processes that help you prevent chaos and keep things organized
Managerial: processes that help you organize and manage all other processes
Understanding the role of each category is crucial for the operation of your business.
Assess Process
Define the process boundary and qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the process. Develop a future state vision of the new process. Develop a high-level business case and an improvement opportunities roadmap to implement the vision.
Methodological approach:
- Define the process framework respecting strategic objectives, existing pain points and needs.
- Identify any related current initiatives that could have an impact on the project.
- Qualitatively and quantitatively analysis – improvement opportunities and performance gaps.
- Develop vision of the future state and identify gaps based on the current state process.
- Identify improvement opportunities, strategic improvements, and quick wins.
- Draft a business case and roadmap to show how the vision can be implemented.
- Review the results of the current state assessment with executive leadership.
Design Process
Design the future state process and determine the business model, operating model, and enterprise architecture changes needed to implement the design. Develop the business case and roadmap to support the implementation.
Methodological approach:
- Implement quick wins identified in the previous phase.
- Develop a hypothesis of the future state process design.
- Refine and test the feasibility of the design in a workshop setting with stakeholders.
- Identify the required changes to the business model, operating models and architecture to implement the future state process design.
- Develop the detailed business case and roadmap to implement the process.
- Validate the process design with executive leadership.
